Designing Habits ♡

Designing habits is something that can make living this ideal life more sustainable, more proactive.

Habits are behaviours that, when repeated constantly, start happening subconsciously - they often take time to stick but they never have to be perfect.

Willpower is a long-term result of habit.


START DESIGNING YOUR HABITS


Figure out what you want to build.

  • What does your ideal life look like? Ofcourse this will change almost everytime you think about it, figure out most of the major details and put them to paper.

  • How does your daily routine contribute to a successful week, month and therefore year? What do you need to do everyday to become the great you?


Create an environment for success.

  • When the internal will to succeed fizzles out a few weeks after starting something new, you will need something that holds the reminder of what you wish to accomplish. An external motivator.

  • It may be your immediate physical environment that maintains the memory of your goals. Like the sight of your workout clothes in the mornings to push you towards your workout. Or the out-of-sight phone in the morning to keep you from seeing notifications from last night.


Make the journey as smooth as possible.

  • The journey to the greatest you ever will not be easy, but you can definitely make it as comfortable as you can for yourself.

  • " Reduce the friction." If you've read atomic habits, then you know. Essentially, this is the idea that you lessen any extra work* necessary to achieve your goals, do not buy processed foods if you would like to eat less of them.

  • This links to making your environment conducive; strive to make your environment as convenient for your life as you can before you just fall into the trap of the alternative.


Celebrate moments that highlight growth.

  • Being intentional about celebrating growth can pass many over easily, but that should not be the case. Recognize how much more differently you are doing things and celebrate yourself in those moments.

  • Do self-audits. As you plan for success, allow grace for setbacks and nudge yourself gently towards the path that will make your "audits" celebratory moments.


Trialing routines to reach habits.

  • Different seasons require different routines, try out as many routines as you need to as you figure out what works for you.

  • As you go through routines, make actual notes about what works in every routine and release what does not work for you in that moment.


Overtime these habits will form a system.


While it may take time to have all your habits on lock, soon enough it will feel a little odd without them and having a system will dwarf the chaos in your life.
